NEW is proud to be nominated for Los Angeles Business Journal’s 2023 Non-Profit & Corporate Citizenship “Outstanding Collaboration Between a Business + Nonprofit” Award. During Women’s History Month, it is an honor to receive the spotlight for our partnership with Klaudia Kovács, the multi-award-winning Hollywood film director, entrepreneur, and NEW’s Women’s Business Center client. The partnership between NEW’s Women’s Business Center and our long-time client Klaudia shows how an organization with a mission to spark economic mobility for underserved women entrepreneurs helped fuel the drive for Hollywood’s multi-talented woman director even during COVID, resulting in her short film BROWN PAPER BAG winning TWO Film Festival awards in 2022 in Cannes, France.
The collaboration, which assisted in creating BROWN PAPER BAG, helped cast a brighter spotlight on the importance of recognizing the works of other diverse directors. In Hollywood where the majority of diverse/female directors, writers, and producers are a small minority, we rarely see or hear of their work. However, because Klaudia’s BROWN PAPER BAG garnered multiple prestigious 2022 Cannes Film Festival awards, she is shining the spotlight on the power of diversity, which helps other diverse directors, producers, and writers, and their works to be considered.
Maggie Cervantes, Executive Director of New Economics for Women says, “NEW is proud to see our clients succeed and especially pleased to spotlight our partnership with Klaudia. For almost 40 years, NEW has sparked economic mobility for women and their families through a range of comprehensive programs and initiatives. Women facing additional vulnerabilities, made glaringly evident during this global pandemic, can seek support and resources from NEW to fulfill their dreams. I am glad to see that our investments ensure women entrepreneurs like Klaudia have the access to educational and economic opportunities to succeed in life.”
