Human Resources Manager

$80,000-$95,000 annually

(1) Human Resources Coordinator
Work Hours:
Monday – Friday 40 hours/ week, some evenings and weekends required

Position Summary

The Human Resources Manager is a member of NEW’s senior leadership team and supports the organization’s mission, cultural development, and strategic growth. This position is accountable for day-to-day operations pertaining to all human resources administration with an emphasis on employee engagement, employee relations, and talent development. This role has both strategic and tactical responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the human resources department effectively applying and implementing policies and procedures using up-to-date knowledge of employment law and professional best practices
  • Support risk management initiatives by maintaining the organization in compliance in areas such as EEO, harassment prevention, I-9, employee files, wage and hour, and a variety of state and federal employment laws and regulations. Stay current on compliance requirements, make recommendations and advise management on needed action
  • Lead, train and oversee the work of the Human Resources Coordinator and consultants
  • Administer benefits programs including but not limited to group health, retirement, etc. byreviewing and evaluating the effectiveness and value of the programs. Benchmark and make recommendations for benefit plan changes and enhancements. Responsible for effective processing of enrollments, changes, terminations, invoice reconciliation, auditing, problem-solving, and communication to employees and plan participants
  • Administer leave of absence programs such as FMLA, CFRA, PDL, Workers Compensation, Military, COBRA, etc. including problem-solving and coordination with all involved parties
  • Manage worker’s compensation programs including claim reporting, tracking, monitoring, problem-solving, and coordination with the insurance carriers, medical providers, and employee
  • Support recruitment efforts for all positions such as developing job descriptions, posting positions, screening resumes, interviewing candidates, communicating with hiring managers, and coordinating and scheduling interviews
  • Administer temporary staffing in collaboration with managers, staffing agency, or workforce development agency
  • Develop and implement an effective onboarding program for all new hires
  • Manage employee relations with a focus on employee engagement
  • Assist supervisors with the management of employee performance and development
  • Understand and communicate Employee Handbook policies
  • Answer employee questions and demonstrate a commitment to resolution
  • Additional responsibilities, as necessary

Qualifications and Experience

  • Advanced knowledge of principles and practices of personnel administration and core competencies in the areas of:
    • Employment Law (California and Federal)
    • Wage and Hour
    • Leave of Absence Management
    • Benefits Administration
    • Compensation
    • Talent Development (Onboarding, Training)
  • Strong written skills with the ability to prepare various communications such as emails, memos, postings, and general correspondence
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to earn the trust and respect of coworkers, management, and staff
  • Ability to verbally communicate one-on-one and in small to large groups. Ability and experience conducting presentations
  • Ability to resolve a variety of employment matters in a professional, friendly, and confidential manner effectively using tact and diplomacy
  • Excellent at navigating various tasks and competing priorities
  • Excellent at problem-solving
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors andemployees
  • Ability to communicate difficult information in a way that preserves dignity and respect forindividuals
  • Ability to positively influence, motivate, and drive change and continuous improvement
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, internet research, and easily able to learn new software programs

Education

  • 5 years of related experience in a human resources position in an organization of at least 100 employees
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and/or equivalent work experience is preferred
  • A Human Resources designation (i.e., PHR-CA, SHRM-CP) is preferred

Additional Requirements

  • Be able and willing to work flexible hours which may include evenings or weekends
  • Fingerprinting and TB Clearance
  • Have or be able and willing to obtain CPR/First Aid training
  • Have reliable transportation and:
    • A valid driver’s license
    • Proof of insurance and ownership for personal vehicles used during work duties
