Housing Counselor – Economic Mobility Department

$55,000 – $70,000 (100% FTE) ($21.63 – $24.04 per hour)

Monday – Friday 40 hours week, some evenings and weekends required

Position Summary

The Homeownership Counselor works under the direct supervision of the Manager of Homeownership. This position is responsible for providing a full range of services including; foreclosure prevention counseling, financial education, and first-time homebuyer counseling, as well as, facilitating group education workshops and conducting individual one-on-one pre-purchase guidance. The Homeownership Counselor maintains a professional and effective relationship with clients and program stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide pre-purchase and foreclosure prevention counseling to clients
  • Speak to mortgage lenders as an advocate for borrowers
  • Provide a complete financial assessment for clients using a budget, credit report and generating action plans
  • Effectively maintain a pipeline of 50 clients or more
  • Submit monthly contract goal reports to the Manager of the Homeownership Department
  • Record and update client progress and outcomes on a web-based database
  • Participate in first-time homebuyer fairs, panels, and community events
  • Conduct follow-up calls to clients and one-on-one, face-to-face counseling services.
  • Gather all necessary documents from clients to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Monitor hard copy client files to ensure compliance with Housing and Urban Development (HUD)standards
  • Attend certified training to ensure compliance with funder and NEW requirements
  • Outreach and promote programs to local organizations, schools, libraries, etc.
  • Bring additional resources, such as lenders, real estate agents, etc. to the department
  • Represent NEW and the Homeownership Department at appropriate outside meetings and events • Translate materials as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience

  • HUD Housing Counseling Certification (preferred)
  • Neighborworks or NHNLA Certified in the following categories: Foreclosure Prevention Counseling, Pre-Purchase Counseling, Homebuyer Education
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and work well under pressure
  • Possess strong organizational skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, internet, and database software programs
  • Some physical demands to prepare for workshops – lift boxes with informational packages, supplies, etc…

Education

2 years of housing counseling experience, 2 years of experience in Mortgage Lending/Real Estate field, OR Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or related to job description

Additional Requirements

  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License, Liability Insurance, and an automobile in good working condition
  • Fingerprinting and TB Clearance
  • Flexible with working hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Fluent in Spanish Required
