The current recession is taking its toll on NEW’s most vulnerable clients – children of single parents. Nearly 72% of single mothers are struggling to make ends meet versus 51% of married women, according to a recent public policy poll. The California Budget Project reports that women who are sole breadwinners are experiencing greatly increased financial stress related to paying utilities, food, and rent, which is compounded by the reduction in social services and afterschool programs.

Speaking in Washington, D.C. at the Women of Color and Wealth Symposium, on behalf of New Economics for Women (NEW), was an honor and a wonderful opportunity to talk about the work we are doing every day.
But, you might ask, why was NEW at a conference about Wealth? Isn’t Poverty a term more often associated with the people served by NEW, low-income immigrants from Mexico and other parts of Latin America, who live in Pico Union, one of the densest and poorest sections of Los Angeles. The Insight Center and several national women's organizations including NEW gathered on March 8, 2010 in Washington DC to hold a series of panel discussions on the intersection of race, gender, immigration, and wealth, and to release a groundbreaking report on women of color. NEW’s Board President Bea Stotzer addressed the topic First Generation Women Immigrants: Generating New Wealth, Generating a Global Economy.

Councilman Dennis P. Zine was joined by community members, civic leaders, students and their families on February 18, 2010 to celebrate the opening of the Dennis P. Zine Community Center. The 12,000 square foot Community Center is the third phase of Tierra Del Sol, New Economics for Women's five-acre planned community which provides affordable housing and education opportunities for low – and very low-income families located within the Reseda/Canoga Park Redevelopment Project Area.
